Standing with our immigrant sister and brothers

ree

“…what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,

love kindness and walk humbly with your God”—Micah 6:8

The Session of Trinity Presbyterian Church stands with our immigrant sisters and brothers in expressing our moral outrage at the policies of the current administration with respect to the treatment of undocumented persons residing within our borders.  We call for the end of deportation of persons without allowing for due process. Far too many people in our country have been questioned by over-zealous ICE-related officers based upon their ethnicity or appearance.

We commend our sister congregations and social justice agencies who have also expressed solidarity with our immigrant communities, and invite them to join us in considering the following activities:

  1. Educate their constituencies about legal issues and (if appropriate) the positions taken by their sponsoring organizations or denominations with respect to immigration;

  2. Become an “accompaniment” church or entity. “This includes accompanying people to appointments, helping them secure legal counsel, fighting for access to driver’s licenses, and working to amplify the voices of immigrants to raise public awareness of the harmful effects of immigration policies.” (PCUSA, General Assembly News)

    1. Encourage members to join other congregations or entities in delivering groceries and supplies to families afraid to venture out in public.

    2. Train members on how to report law enforcement actions they witness, such as detaining individuals.  This could include “active bystander” training.

  3. Donate and encourage individuals to donate to organizations that support Hispanics and others facing detention or deportation. (Locally this might include Pisgah Legal Services and True Ridge.)

  4. Join other organizations to issue statements to the press and elected officials that express concern about immigration policies and advocate for more just immigration legislation.

  5. Partner with a local Hispanic congregation or organization, seeking their guidance on how to walk with them in this crisis and beyond.

  6. Encourage faith leaders to inspire their congregations with a deeper understanding of the Biblical call to act on behalf of social justice. Offer discussions on relevant social justice issues.

“…for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you...

They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel…”

—Ezekiel 47:22

“ Let justice roll down like waters, and

righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

—Amos 5: 24
